1. What activities are most challenging to teach reading to Young Learners before the age of 5 in my opinion might be when the child has problems in reading such as slow reading, a reading disability or maybe dyslexia and to teach it may require patience, sufficient knowledge to teach children like they, and then do not push our child to read at a level that is a struggle for them. Practice is extremely important, but only in skills that have already been taught, and teach them with Phonological and phonemic awareness are language-based skills that involve the ability to distinguish, remember, manipulate, articulate, and process the speech sounds in words. These skills are critical for long-term success in reading and reading fluency.

2. I choose Story reading (picture story book) for teaching young learners
Topic: The Animals
Aims of Teaching: Students are able to say some words, imitate sound of animal, and spell partially/fully (dog, cat, cow, duck, sheep, pig, horse, chicken, and mouse).

Procedures:

1. Teacher reads the story with some animals have been learnt with the picture story book.
2. Teacher models the sound of animals with the picture of animals.
3. Teacher asks young lerners to imitate their animals' sound.

Teaching Reading To Young Learners

Name:  Leni Silviani

NIM:  2109180105

CLASS 2A

1. In my opinion, the most challenging activity to teach Reading to young learners before 5 years old is when the children feel bored.  As the teacher, we must be creative teacher that has many methods for making the children comfortable to learn English.  On the other hand, the children not only feel bored but also maybe they will not follow the activity again because they don't like monotone activity.  The most important thing is not about to make the children clever in reading but to make the children like reading.  Some literature also shows that there is no guarantee that someone who can first read will be more successful in the future than those who are late like Albert Einstein, George S. Patton, William Butler Yeats are those who are late reading.  So, we must be good teachers that have the creativity to make the children like reading.

2. I choose teaching reading to young learners with playing games.

What you need
A dictionary
Paper cards
A pen

Guess The Word

This game requires larger participation from our end, but it directly helps the child comprehend complex questions easily.

 How To Play

Either use a dictionary directly or write various words on flashcards and put them all in a bucket. Let your child pick out a word and tell you the number of letters in it. You now end up asking him questions that can be answered either in a “yes” or a “no”. Ask questions such as “does the word have vowels” or “is it an animal” so that your child also has some thinking to do at his end, before he answers your question.

Task of Teaching Reading to Young Learners

Name : Nisrina Nurmilah
NIM : 2109180082
Class : 2A

1. The most challenging activity to teach reading to young learners before 5 years old is as we know that children like playing. We can combine between playing and teaching reading together but we don't allowed to pressured the child. So, we can have a good books make a reading fun. Stories for young children should be of all kinds-folktales, funny tales, exciting tales, tales of the wondrous and stories that tell of everyday things. Young children want to read what makes them laugh or cry, shiver and gasp. They must have stories and poems that reflect what they themselves have felt. They need the thrill of imagining, of being for a time in some character's shoes for a spine-tingling adventure. They want to experience the delight and amazement that comes with hearing playful language. For children, reading must be equated with enjoying, imagining, wondering, and reacting with feeling. If not, we should not be surprised if they refuse to read. So let child sometime choose the story or book that they want you to read to them. Give child many opportunities to read and write stories, lists, messages, letters, notes, and postcards to relatives and friends. Since the skills for reading and writing reinforce one another, your child's skills and proficiency in reading and writing will be strengthened if you help child connect reading to writing and writing to reading.
2. I choose on of teaching reading methods is story reading or picture story book, because in this activity need more understanding about models the sound of animals. Sometimes the young learners still confused to imitate the animal's sound, maybe for animals they usually meet like cats or dogs they will know. In this activity the teacher should really can imitate clearly the animals sound. So that, the young learners can understand. The aims is student are able to say some words, imitate sound of animal, and spell partially/fully like a cow, duck, sheep, chicken and etc.
The procedures :
1. Teacher reads the story with some animals have learnt with the picture story book
2. Teacher models the sound of animals
3. Teacher asks young learners to imitate their animal's sound

1. The most challenging activity to teach reading to young learners before the age of 5 in my opinion is that they still have problems in reading such as reading is still not smooth and there are still many who cannot read so we must have enough patience, do learning to read with fun so that children do not get bored easily, have enough knowledge to teach children like them, and do not teach children at high reading levels can be done first with sample readings that have pictures. In practice we can show pictures that have the writing and then children will read easily and easily remember, we can justify how to read it by imitating what we say, in this case maybe the ability of different children there are easy and difficult when imitating it, and also with the characters of children who are easily bored and most of them prefer to play so we should be able to take advantage of playing while learning.
2. I choose Games (Guessing Game) for teaching young learners.

Topic : The Animals
Aim of Teaching : Students are abe to say some words, imitate saound of animals, and spell partially (cat, dog, duck, cow, sheep, horse, pig, chicken, and mouse)

Teaching with games (Guessing Games) really helps young learners to make it easier for them to read because most young learners get bored easily in terms of learning so they prefer to play, so reading with pictures will make them more enthusiastic and easy to remember the words in the picture so if young learners find words like that young learners can read it again so they can get used to reading.

Procedures :
1. Teacher presents name of animals to review names of animals
2. After that, teacher presents card of animals with their sounds
3. Teacher points the card and let students guess the name of animals.

In my opinion, a challenging activity when teaching reading is literacy, which in Indonesia alone children and adults in literacy are very low.  Which when compared with other countries Indonesia under Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia based on the results of the PISA test (The Program for International Student Assessment) released by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2016. While 70% of people  adults in Jakarta only have the ability to understand information from short writing, but have difficulty understanding information from longer and more complex writing.  And 86% of adults in Jakarta can only solve arithmetic problems that require one step, but difficulty completing calculations that require several steps. This data is inferred from the results of the PIAAC (The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) assessment, a voluntary competency test for adults aged 16 years and over.Low literacy is a fundamental problem that has a very broad impact on the progress of the nation.  Low literacy contributes to the low productivity of the nation.  This leads to low growth and ultimately has an impact on the low level of welfare which is characterized by low per capita income.Low literacy also contributes significantly to poverty, unemployment and inequality. There needs to be special efforts from the government to increase the level of Indonesian literacy.

Teaching with story books has been very positive in that my general perception has been that children become highly motivated learners within this approach.
·         Working with illustrations provides a creative and artistic learning environment which children respond to.
·         A story book provides a child-centred universe where abstract concepts are symbolized within the text and images.
·         It provides an ideal context for literacy practice as well as linguistic acquisition.
·         Supporting visual literacy is important in order to help children take meaning from text as well as develop aesthetic understanding.
·         Providing information through pictures is an important and fast developing method of communication in the global world.

Task of teaching reading to YLs

Name: Iin Inayatillah
NIM: 2109180048
Class: 2A

1. The most challenging to teach reading to young learners before 5 years old is they still read according to the writing even some of them have not be able to read in indonesia or can not read it smoothly. When I give them how to pronounce some word well, then I ask them to imitate me. Maybe, some of them will do it well and some of them get difficultness to pronounce it. Even some of them do nothing, because they are shy or lazy. As we know that young learners are easy to be bored, difficult to manage and they really like playing. So that, I have to be more creative.

2. I choose one of teaching reading methods that is guessing game. If I am an english teacher to young learners I will teach by that method, because they like playing.
Prosedurs of teaching reading about fruit:
1. Teacher presents some names of fruit to review names of fruit.
2. Teacher shows card or stick poster of fruit with mention colour of fruit.
3. Teacher points a card or poster and ask them "what is it?".
4. After they mention the name of fruit, teacher write the name of fruit and ask them to spell it.
5. In the end of class, teacher asks some of them to come forward and mention all of the names of fruit and its colour while appointing the card or poster.
