Exercise based on ( Scott & Ytreberg 1990 )

Classroom Management and Atmosphere
(Scott and Ytreberg, 1990, pp. 12-25)

1. How are the teacher’s (s) characteristics to young learners?

: Every students has their own favorite teacher, usually they like some teacher because of their personalities, be it the friendly one, or the patient one, or any other. But even if you don’t have those personalities, at least you should have some ability an attitude. In abilility, it would be enough for you to have some ability such as singing, drawing, playing music, etc. It’s okay even if your abilities are just avarage as long as it can make learning be more fun and make students to like your class. And for the attitude, as a teacher we must pay attention to every studenst and treat them equally, we also have to encourage the students to improve theirself and let them do or tell what they want without being afraid to make a mistake.

2. How do teachers build phsycal surrounding to YL?

: Teacher can make the class to be more famliar for the children by decorating the class with anything they like or something they brought from home, but don’t forget to leave some space for study.

3. How do teachers arrange the desks in YL calssroom?

:  In arrangement A, the teachers can arrange the desk by four desks per group that make it’s easy for a group work,  and leaving the space in the middle than can help the teachers to reach every students. For arrangement B, the students sit sepatarely and they can only see the back of one who sit in front of them, so it is not suitable in language class. The last arrangement is similar to arrangement B but a bit more flexible and there are more space for teachers to move

4. How do teachers group theYL?

: The teachers can group the YL in pair or with group as needed. Pairwork can be made by pairing with their deskmate. Groupwork can be made for activities that need more people, when the students are not used for groupwork we can introduce them little by little through teaching learning. 

5. How is classroom language used in YL classroom?

: The language is used as much as possible during the class, and to make it easier to understand the teacher can use the tool that can be found in the class and make some coversation where they can develop their language in comunicating and learn more expression in the foreign language.
