Structured Task "Teaching Speaking to Young Learners"

  1. Based on the theories you have learnt about teaching speaking to young learners, what is your firstly consideration on teaching them? My consideration is based on the age of Young Learners. With consideration of age then the next is to determine more effective practices for teaching speaking to them.
  2. Why can speaking be integrated with listening activies? Because by listening, YL can find out how to pronounce the words and they have to say properly and correctly. So every teaching speaking must be integrated with listening. As a teacher, if I teach speaking to YL, I will certainly give an example of what they have to say by listening to my example first, and then they can imitate speaking as I demonstrated.
  3. From the practices of teaching speaking to young learners, choose one of them and please tell me about the procedures detail. I think I chose Song for practice, especially for Young Learners at kindergarden. Because they are in a happy time playing, learning with a song I think it will be fun. For example to teach them about various kinds of fruit, then can use this song as an example https://youtu.be/5tB9ZZBUcv4
    The procedure details are: 
  • Prepare pictures of various kinds of fruit based on the song.
  • The teacher exemplifies singing first. Let the children listen to what the teacher sings.
  • When singing, show pictures of these fruits according to the lyrics of the song.
  • Then allow the children to sing little by little. For example, 3 types of fruit first (Apple, Orange, Pineapple), repeat as often as possible until they are completely memorized. While being helped by the picture shown by the teacher.
  • After memorizing, continue with the lyrics of other fruits in accordance with the song above.
